Gyeongju City's Seondo-san Tombs and Stele of Great King Taejong Muyeol with Korea's best ancient Biseok cap & base
|
King Taejong Muyeol reigned over the burgeoning Shilla Kingdom from 654 to 661, as its 29th monarch.
He is credited for accoplishing the first stages of the unification of the Three Kingdoms of Korea into the
Unified Shilla Dynasty, which was accomplished by his son Taejo Munmu Daewang. He was a friend of
the great army general Kim Yu-shin, who won the battles for unification and also became his brother-in-law
by marrying his sister. The three of them remain revered as the "nation-unifying trinity", being enshrined
as such in the Tong-il-jeon Hall on eastern Mt. Nam-san by President Park Jeong-hui.
King Muyeol's tomb is one of the few that we know the identity of for certain, thanks to the biseok
seen below. Behind it three others of roughly equal size march straight towards the mountain's
southern slopes; their occupants are unknown, and are assumed to be some of his close relatives.
The complex is just south of the Seo-ak Seowon, in Seo-ak-dong [West Peak Village] on the east slope.
