the 2006  Jiri-san  Namak-je  지리산남악제
[Southern Peak Ceremony]
In 2004 I once again came down to the Jiri Mountains on the traditional
"Gok-u"
곡우 date -- falling well after the Third Full Moon this year, on
April 20th of the Western Calendar -- to watch the Namak-je at the
Nam-
ak-dan
[South Peak Altar], a.k.a. Ha-ak-dan [Lower Peak Altar], a.k.a.
Nam-ak-sa 남악사 [South-Peak Shrine] in front of Hwaeom-sa.
preparations
The ceremony started off at after 11 AM this year, preceded by a samul-nori farmer's
percussion and dance performance around the area.  Once again the first part of the
ceremony was a traditional dance performance by women, accompanied by a traditional
Korean orchestra, balancing all the Confucian men ready for the ritual in full traditional dress.
Unfortunately, there was a cold light rain throughout this morning, the
ceremony seem to be done a little faster, taking just over an hour.
As all the officiants bowed and the
ceremonial-prayer-papers were burned at
the end of the ceremony, not much of the
public was left watching due to the rain.
the Buddhist Abbots of nearby Hwaeom-sa
and Cheoneun-sa Monasteries did attend,
the former staying all the way through the
end, as did the Mayor of Gurye.
