the 1999 Cheonje Festival

General view of the Cheonje activities held in the Samseong-gung on the "real Gaecheon-jeol", the Third Day of the Tenth
Moon by the Oriental Lunar Calendar of (myth-based) Korean Year 4332, in "perfect" October weather, tho a bit chilly.
the great view of the proceedings from the Upper Pavilion
|
The Upper Pavilion was a new addition to the compound since my last visit. In it is hung a large gong like those used to
play traditional Korean farmer's music, which is struck to make announcements (it can be heard all over the valley). On
the gong is the philosophical symbol of this organization, derived from the basic ancient Oriental Trinity of Heaven, Earth
and Humanity: the azure circle represents Heaven (and thus Lord Hwan-in), the yellow square represents Earth (and
thus Holy Hwan-eung), and the red triangle represents humanity (and thus Founding-King Dan-gun Wanggeom).
Carving jangseung [guardian-spirit poles], and a large cotton sheet with "spirit-writing" by one of the local sages.

Some of Ham Pil's monumental uncemented-stone Neo-Traditionalist artworks, harmonizing with and accentuating the glories of nature.
