Seonam-sa Monastery is located on the eastern
slope of Mt. Jogye-san Provincial Park, within the
northern Seungju-myeon District of Suncheon City.
Its summit Janggun-bong [Guardian General
Peak] is 884 meters high. It's 12 km SE of
Taean-sa and 25 km SE of Hwaeom-sa (both within
the region of mighty

Recorded legend states that missionary-monk Ado
Hwasang built a hermitage on the eastern slope of
Jogye-san (at that time called Songgwang-san)
and named it Biro-am, in 529 CE (the 7th year of the
reign of Baekje King Seong). 350 years later National
Master Doseon-guksa constructed a grand temple
here and named it Seonam-sa, in 861. As the
head temple out of the "Sam-am-sa" trio (three
"rock" temples, Unam-sa, Yongam-sa,
Seonam-sa), it played a key role in the growth of
Seon Buddhism, and many masters have
practiced, taught and attained awakening here.
Today this important temple contains 19 Cultural
Properties in its halls and museum.
