The 715-m summit of Baekma-san / Baengma-san [White Horse Mountain] is 9 km SE of
downtown Gimcheon City (of NW North Gyeongsang Province) -- 15 kilometers east of
Hwangak-san and the Baekdu-daegan mountain-system and just NE of sacred Sudo-san.
It also features Gobang-sa Temple, said to have been founded by Ado Hwasang at the
same time that he founded Jikji-sa Monastery.
Shinheung-sa was founded in 834 CE (late Unified Shilla Dynasty) by the meditation-master
Do-eui (regarded as a founder of the Jogye Order), as a Seon [Chan, Zen] practice-center.
It is therefore one of the the Gusan-Seonmun "Nine Mountain Meditation Gate" monasteries
that fostered the beginnings of Seon meditational Buddhism in Korea.
Both Shinheung-sa and Gobang-sa are subsidiary temples of Jikji-sa.
Don't confuse this Shinheung-sa with the very famous Shinheung-sa temple of Seorak-san!
