Taebaek-san Buseok-sa's
Upper Shrines
interesting final sights in one of Korea's greatest temples
On the highest terrace of the Floating Rock Temple, where the Sanshin-gak would normally be, along
a trail that heads west from the Josa-dang Founder's Shrine, there are 3 more shrine-halls.    The one
on the left above contains the three stone statues just below, designated together as Treasure #220.
These 3 used to be in hermitages of Buseok-sa that no longer exist, and were moved and enshrined
here in the 1970s.    The shrine on the right is a simple
Nahan-jeon [Arhats Hall].
Birojana-bul  [Vairocana the Buddha of Infinite Cosmic Light], main deity of Hwaeom Buddhism
Sakyamuni the historical Buddha
the other, inferior and damaged, Birojana-bul statue
thick forest and a strong sense of ancient history are found along the trail
the third shrine up here, east of and behind the others, in the size and siting of a classic Sanshin-gak,
is this cute hall containing a Shamanic image representing Mireuk-bul [Maitreya the Future Buddha]
